Registration is Now Open for Fall 2011

We are now registering teams for our Fall 2011 season. If you're interested in joining or returning to the league, just email Ren Hsieh (ren@fastbreaknyc.com) to sign up or for more information.

The season will begin with an Open Gym OCTOBER 15, regular season will begin on OCTOBER 22 and season should conclude early DECEMBER. All matches will be scheduled on Saturdays between 1-4pm.

THE LEAGUE FEE IS $500 FOR NEW TEAMS and $400 for returning teams. This includes 6-8 weeks (depending on total # of teams) of match play and a one-day playoff for the league championship. All teams will also receive a set of (10) team t-shirts, all equipment will be provided as well as a referee.

Balls of Fury began as an Asian-American community-based league started by Dynasty Project (www.dynastyproject.org) but we have always been an all-inclusive league and everyone is welcome to join.

Fall 2010 Week 2 Recap

Balls of Fury vs. Peter's Soldiers
The first match of the day pit the old vs. new as one of BoF's original franchises, the Balls of Fury faced the new blood, Peter's Soldiers. Upon entering the gym, from one side to another, all you could see was the black shirts of Peter's Soldiers warming up, ready to win.

BoF on the other hand strolled into the gym, late again, one-by-one without a care in the world as if their experience alone would carry them. And, as if they knew, the match started off with two straight easy Ws for BoF. But, just as they became lax, PS came back with a win of their own. Then another and suddenly, the tone of the match changed. Every match after that became a battle of attrition and the court was littered with blood. No, sweat, it was sweat.

Balls went into the half leading 3-2 but PS came out strong in the 2nd, string together consecutive wins and playing what appeared to be a sure BoF win to a draw. With one game left, PS led 5-4-1 in the match and seemed almost a lock for victory across from a drained Balls of Fury team. But, in this game, looks can always deceive. Balls came out knocking out 4 out of 6 PS players almost instantly.

The Soldiers, however, stuck with it and evened the odds at two on two with less than a minute remaining. BoF captain Ren Hsieh and Thomas Bello Jr. somehow mustered up every last bit of energy they had and with just one Soldier left standing, Hsieh challenged his opponent to throw and caught the ball for the final out, ending the game in a 5-5-1 draw.

L.S.C. vs. Super-Friends

A rematch of last year's Championship game, the Super Friends showed the league last week that they want more than 2nd place this season and with Last Season's Champions looking past their primes, who was to stop them?

Clearly, L.S.C. went back to the drawing board and came up with something. Their plan obviously, was not to get wasted the night before the match. The plan worked. L.S.C. came out smoking hot, piecing wins together like they were on a board of Tetris.

Though SF makes no excuses, they did add some new players, still learning the rules and the intensity of the sport. Rumor has it that one of their new additions was a regular in the NY dodgeball circuit. And, sure enough, dude was rocking the short shorts and knee pads. And, he was all over the place. A single human embodiment of the 5-Ds. And, just like that, the Friends came back with consecutive wins.

L.S.C., however, still went into the half leading 4-2. And, in the 2nd, they played it like it was the championship all over again. Even after winning the match with games to spare, defending MVP Ynoel Lopez wasn't satisfied until he got every possible win for his team. Talk about a man dedicated to getting back to the top of the food chain. Lopez was possessed. L.S.C. wins 7-3.

Hallow's Eve Dodgeball Jamboree

Come on out to BoF's Hallow's Eve Dodgeball Jamboree!

Teams from the BoF Dodgeball Fall 2010 league will already be competing but new teams can join this one-day, one-shot mini-tournament 2:00-5:00pm (all teams must arrive at 1:30pm). THIS IS CO-ED 6-ON-6 DODGEBALL, all teams MUST have a min of (2) ladies to compete.

Teams are encouraged to play in costume but are not required. There will be a $100 prize for the team with the best costumes!

A gourmet treat basket from Spot Dessert Bar will be presented to the individual player voted Best Costume. Plus, plenty of more door prizes to be given out including t-shirts and goodie bags.

Teams are playing for the Hallow's Eve Jamboree Cup trophy and a free pizza party for the champs.

Just $30 to enter a team or $5 each additional individual (or as a free agent) if you aren't already a member of the Balls of Fury Dodgeball Fall 2010 league.

Fall 2010 Weekly Power Rankings

1.) Balls of Fury: There's a new Sheriff in town and his name is Ren Hsieh. After taking his spot back as captain of this team from Duke Hogwild, the Balls have been totally revamped. Mixing a little of the good from last season's team with some newer, longer and more athletic players. This team is scary good. After last week's 2nd half domination of L.S.C., no other team is more fitting to be ranked 1st this week. If you have a problem with that, 2 words, STEP UP!

2.) Super-Friends: This team was missing some key players but they still managed to squeeze out a win after starting down 5-4 to a newly formed team. This is when experience prevails. If the core sticks together they can still win most games. They have a tough challenge against L.S.C this week. Let's see if they can avenge last season's loss in the finals.

3.) Peter's Soldiers: The young bloods this season. What a great start to Fall 2010 by pushing last season's runner-ups to the brink. What this team lacks in experience they make up for with heart. I have never seen a team that has players willing to do all 5 D's (if you don't know what that is, shame on you and look it up on Youtube). A couple more weeks of games and this team will be ready to compete for the CUP this season.

4.) L.S.C.: What disappointing way to start the season. After assuming control of the match against BoF going in to the half, they were dismantled in the 2nd. This team will have to do some deep soul searching if they want to get back to the top. Maybe it was the name change that give them too much confidence. Whatever it is they need to do, they better do it fast because the league is evolving just as fast, maybe even faster.

5.) Disco's Lil' Infernos: Until they actually play a match they will be ranked last.

Super-Friends vs. Peter's Soldiers

The Fall 2010 season's opening match pitted last season's runner-up Super-Friends versus a newly formed team by the name of Peter's Soldiers. Super-Friends was more than ready for the start of the season. With most of their roster styling with matching headbands, wristbands and socks, you knew they were serious.

Peter's Soldiers, however, weren't fazed by that at all, rolling 9 deep for their first match of the season. The game started with an easy win for Super-Friends, which had some thinking it would be an easy victory for them, but Peter's Soldiers had other plans in mind. Both teams gave very little breathing room to the other. The match was tied 3-3 going into the half-time break.

With the start of the 2nd half, Peter's Soldiers came out attacking, being the first to win consecutive games in the match. With the games 5-3 in PET's favor Super-Friends captain, David Lau let his team know what was going wrong for them in the game in a vicious manner. But that was the spark their team needed. The Super-Friends played like their collective lives depended on it, as if each ball was loaded with C-4 and various forms of fatality-inducing shrapnel, winning the next 2 games and they snatched the match 6-5.

So, look out campers, after just one match both these teamslook like they're in mid-season's form. Words to the wise for other teams this season, WATCH OUT!

L.S.C. vs. Balls of Fury
With a name like L.S.C., which stands for Last Season's Champions, formerly known as the Sitting Ducks, you'd kind of get a feeling of just how big this team's collective heads got after winning it all last season. They're still celebrating in the streets of Duck-land because this team came into the gym still reeking of Chivas.

The Balls of Fury came into the game warmed up and ready to go. up against an L.S.C. with basically the same core roster. The Fury looked like they upgraded this season with longer, more athletic players presumably from the basketball league next door, for which team captain, Ren Hsieh, Commish of FBNYC should have no shortage. So, nothing like last season's band of misfits.

The game got rolling with L.S.C. winning the first 3 gms easily. Then, the Fury got away with one when new recruit Alex Shu was not called out despite stepping on the end line. He was able to take out the last LSC standing. The two teams split the next two, going into the half 4-2 L.S.C. Despite just a two game deficit, it appeared to everyone, even the Fury, that they were merely playing for pride. But the second half was a different story.

The Fury finally settled into the pace and rules, and even displayed a structured offensive attack as they came out blazing, winning 4 straight games to clinch the match. Even in the final game, which BoF just about gave to L.S.C., Maisie Wong, avoided three LSC strikers including last season's MVP Ynoel Lopez, in the final minute to run out the clock. It was a lost game but also a message, they never got her down.

Make no mistake, this was the biggest upset in all of dodgeball history, PERIOD! Some L.S.C players blamed it on the Chivas, some on the lack of team work but in the end, the Balls of Fury just outplayed the Champs. This is going to be one crazy season. Fall 2010 League Open for Registration

The Balls Of Fury Fall 2010 League will begin October 15, 2010.

Games will be played Saturday afternoons (1-5pm) with make-up days on Sunday afternoons (1-5pm). The season will run through the following dates:

LOCATION

All games will be played in the Upper West Side in the practice gym at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School (122 Amsterdam Ave btwn. 65th and 66th Sts).

REGISTRATION

Teams may consist of 10-12 players with a minimum of (4) women. REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 6, 2010. To register, just submit your payment via Paypal below and e-mail Commissioner Will "The Flying Dumpling" Lee (wlee29@earthlink.net).

Players may register as individuals or as a team. Individual players or "Free Agents" must submit $35 to enter the league and will be placed on a team with availability on their roster. Team fees are $350 per team, compare that to $1000 at the New York Social Sports Club or $925.00 at ZogSports.

PRE-SEASON OPEN GYM

There will be a Pre-Season Open Gym (Oct 9) when teams can come in and pick up their team shirts and check out other teams. You may even be able to pick up a free agent for teams who are still looking to fill out their roster.

Spring 2010 Playoffs Recap

(1) Sitting Ducks VS (4) Balls of Fury

This was an uphill battle from the get-go for last place BoF. It was bad enough having to play the no. 1 seed but then having to do it short-handed. BoF did hand Sitting Ducks their only lost of the season but the Ducks came out locked and loaded, winning the first 5 games without even breaking much of a sweat. Fury showed they still had some life in them by winning the next two but it would their last hurrah. After realizing the entirety of the playoffs were to be concluded in one day, the Sitting Ducks wanted to just win and rest. Ducks won the next 3 easily. Final score Sitting Ducks 8, Balls of Fury 2.

(2) Super-friends VS (3) Ducks & Rabbits

The battle of the opposites. One team always has a full squad and the other could barely get 6 people to show up on a good day. Both are talented teams but Super-Friends had the edge in team chemistry. Ducks & Rabbits started the match out with a win, but this isn't about just one game. Soon enough, the Super-Friends would string a few victories together and hold off the Ducks & Rabbits. This match had some close calls but in the end Super-Friends win 8-3.

Spring 2010 Week 5 Recap

Super-Friends vs. Ducks & Rabbits

Surprisingly, this is the first meeting between these two teams this season. With Ducks & Rabbits on hiatus for 2 weeks, you would think they'd have some rust to shake off but alas, no, they looked just fine. With most of their roster MIA, they did have enough to get the match started. After the poor showing last week, Super-Friends were looking to get back in to the flow of winning but Ducks & Rabbits welcome back party prevailed. Especially, with Cindy Mui of Ducks & Rabbits playing out of her head, doing a first-class version of the immortal "Five D's." Ducks & Rabbits win 7-4.

Ducks & Rabbits vs. Sitting Ducks
The Battle of the Ducks. Both teams were missing a few players so this match was all about stamina. With Ducks & Rabbits having to play the no. 1 team after playing a previous match, it was a steep mountain to climb. And, again the Sitting Ducks displayed why they're the no. 1 team in the league right now with their numerous offensive weapons. Sitting Ducks in a rout 10-1.

Furry Duck Balls vs. ThunderCats (Exhibition Match)

With the league starting to generating interest from outside camps, BoFDL Commish, Will Lee, scheduled an exhibition game to see what one of these interested new teams had to offer. The ThunderCats, who will be joining the league for the summer season, took on a joint team of players from the Balls of Fury and Sitting Ducks, forming the "Furry Duck Balls" (apologies to the tender-hearted). With ThunderCats looking to wet their feline feet, the Duck Balls came out blazing to welcome them in, like with Super Soakers and water balloons on the last day of school.

Surprisingly, the Cats held their gound pretty well and after playing a few games, they started to get acclimated to the rules and the pace of the game. This is a team with some talent and a lot of energy, running wild and diving for dodgeballs. They will make some noise next season. But, for now, the Furry Duck Balls and all their experience won handily 8-3.

Spring 2010 Week 4 Power Rankings

1.) Sitting Ducks (36-19-0): After losing a match in week 3, Sitting Ducks were done with losing for the season. Finally with the whole team committed for the rest of the season. They showed why they are the number 1 team this season by dominating their 2 opponents in week 4. This is going to be scary for the other teams in the league with playoffs right around the corner.

2.) Super-Friends (21-22-1): Super-Friends had been the most consistent with player attendance this season, but in week 4 they were missing some players. That kind of hurt them record wise, but they will stay put in the number 2 spot this week. Let's hope everyone shows up for the upcoming games.

3.) Balls of Fury (21-33-1): Duke Hogwild and his band of misfits realized the season is for meshing together and playoffs is where the wins count. With a shocking win over the number 1 team, confidence is building. With 1 game left in the season for them to mesh, Balls of Fury are planning to make some noise in the playoffs.

4.) Ducks & Rabbits (9-13-0): This team has been MIA for the last few weeks due to work and other reasons. Not much can be said about this team or season. Let's hope they can get everything worked out and get some games in and some rust of their shoulder before the playoffs starts.

Sitting Ducks vs. Super-Friends

Maybe this match was supposed to be the one where the Super-Friends came in, won with authority and took over no. 1 spot this week. But, the Sitting Ducks were ready, still stinging from last week's upset loss to the Balls of Fury. With Super-Friends missing some of its best offensive firepower and the Ducks having all theirs, the match was brutal. Despite one of the greatest comebacks in an individual game every seen in BoF dodgeball, the Ducks came out quacking and breezed through this one 8-3.

Balls of Fury vs. Sitting Ducks

This was a redemption game for Sitting Ducks. After losing their only match of the season so far to Balls of Fury, Ducks were out for revenge and to prove they're still the best team in the league. With BoF short handed this week, they certainly gave the Ducks a run for their money in the 1st half, going into the break, tied 3-3. The 2nd half, however, was a different story. The Sitting Ducks came out gunning and Balls of Fury just ran out of steam. Ducks win 7-4.

Balls of Fury vs. Super-Friends

This was a rematch from Week 1. The competition was tight from the start. The first 4 games went back and forth but after that it was all Super-Friends, winning 4 straight to win the match. Despite losing, however, the Balls Fury still displayed alot of heart and plenty of battle cries, finishing strong. Super-Friends win 7-4.

Balls of Fury vs. Sitting Ducks
This might be the biggest upset of the season or ever. With Sitting Ducks missing some of their key players and running with a few fill-ins. There were still no worries on their mind. After winning the first game, however, the Ducks were a bit too full of themselves. Next came perhaps one of the greatest deconstructions of a dodgeball team ever, pardon the hyperbole. But, this was a dismantling. Balls Of Fury, coming off a previous match in a double-header, was warmed up and ready to go. They were blazing hot, winning 6 gms in a row to win the match. After clinching the match, BoF let up, allowing the Sitting Ducks to finish with a respectable 6-5 loss.

Balls of Fury vs. Ducks & Rabbits

This match was pretty interesting from the start. Ducks & Rabbits barely had enough to start the game and Balls of Fury came out with the whole crew--and I mean the WHOLE crew. But it's not about quantity, it's the quality of the players. Ducks started off hot, winning the first 3 games. BoF hung in there but they were to unorganized to get a streak going. Ducks & Rabbits win this one 7-4.

Sitting Ducks vs. Super-Friends

This was the Game of the Week. Commissioner Will Lee was offering up a free bottle (presumably of liquor)to whichever team finished with a shut-out. But, as the Commish put it, "everyone and their mama knew that wasn't going to happen." After losing the first game, Super-Friends went on a little streak, winning 3 in a row. Seeing how much trouble they were in, the Ducks decided to step it up a notch. Shaving off 5 wins in a row and netting the win 7-4.

Spring 2010 Week 1 Power Rankings

1.) Sitting Ducks (9-2-0): Having dominated the #2 team in the ranking this week this team will stay put on top. This team has so much firepower. So much talent on this team but they lack chemistry. That’s what the regular season is for, to build for the playoffs. I don’t see this team going down anytime soon or at all.

2.) Super-Friends (7-3-1): In just 1 week they move from last to 2nd. Maybe this team have known each other for a long time. They sure are bonding on the field. Let’s hope they can live up to it, they’ve got a tough challenge this week. Can they knock knock off #1?

3.) Balls of Fury (3-7-1): In the preseason ranking this team was labeled band of misfits, boy is that so true. This team remains me of the Nightrider’s Armalite motorcycle gang from the movie Mad Max. Just be careful with this team, they can sneak up on you.

4.) Ducks & Rabbits (2-9-0): From 2nd to last, that is going to happen to any team that gets blown-out. Let’s hope most of the players show up this week. It won’t be a problem for this team to move back up on the rankings. That’s only if the whole team shows up.

What a difference it makes when you get one preseason game in. Super-Friends had the same team on the field but played so differently. They completely dominated Balls of Fury. On the other hand Balls of Fury didn’t even have enough to form a team ready for this game. With a bunch of subs, Balls of Fury did manage to get 3 wins and a 1 tie.

Ducks & Rabbits vs Sitting Ducks
This was suppose to be a fairly even match but Sitting Ducks thought otherwise. Ducks & Rabbits came out blazing, They took care of Sitting Ducks in 1 min for the first game. But after that it was all Sitting Ducks, a mercy rule should have been applied destroying Ducks & Rabbits 9-2.

Spring 2010 Pre-Season Rankings

1.) Sitting Ducks: Last season’s runner-up. With most of the players signing on for another season. This team is build with pure athleticism and not to mention the Commissioner’s Flying Dumpling. They will strike fear into opponents even before the start of the game. And the scariest part is they added more firepower with the addition of Ynoel Lopez. Don’t let his looks fool you, he is good, really good.

2.) Ducks and Rabbits: New team to the league but boy do they look good in the preseason game. Knowing Captain Will Wang and how he operates. He will not put in a team unless he knows he has a chance. This a very smart mature team, maybe it’s due to their age. They will not let a chance go to waste and expend to much energy. It’s a chess battle with the team.

3.) Balls of Fury: The team of brothers and a few add-ons had the potential last season due to all-around plays of Aaron Hsieh. With the younger Hsieh migrating to the Lone Star state until the summer and middle brother Liren Teng out with a knee injury, it looks like older brother Ren Hsieh has to step it up or throw in the towel. With the addition of Duke Hogwild and his band of misfits this will be interesting.

4.) Super-Friends: The other new team and on the other side of the rankings. Captain David Lau and group his longtime friends. The chemistry is not there yet, maybe it’s because they haven’t bonded in awhile. There is time for this team but not during the regular season. Playoffs? Maybe.

Pre-season games are designed so that teams can get a feel of not only what it is like to play in the league but with their teammates and opponents. We are still open for registration up until the first week of games starting Saturday (2/27) .

To everyone that has interest in joining this season's dodgeball league. We will be having an open gym this saturday. If you are still iffy about getting hit, come down and I'll let you throw the ball at me. It is free to come down to hurl, dodge and make some new friends. This is an open event so feel free to invite anyone.

Spring 2010 League Open for Registration

Balls Of Fury Dodgeball League is about to get under way.

Teams consist of 10 players max, 6 on 6, minimum of 2 females on the playing field at the start of the game. The League is coed. And I can promise you it won't hurt when you get hit because we use regulation size STYROFOAM balls.

All games will be held at Martin Luther King Jr. High School located at 122 Amsterdam Ave between 65th and 66th st on Saturdays or Sundays in the afternoon. We set games according to your schedule with 1 week notice in advance.

If you are interested and can't get a team together that is fine because we will probably have some teams that will need extra players.The league should be starting around the first week of February.

League fee is $300 per team and that comes with team shirts or $40 per person if you don't have enough to form a team and would like to go into the free agent market. Also we will keep stats and have video highlights weekly.

Balls of Fury Dodgeball presents the First Annual

HALLOWEEN CHARITY DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT

Just $60 to enter a team...

All teams MUST have a theme and wear costumes... e.g. if your team theme is pirates, everybody has to look like a freakin' pirate.

All contestants will be eligible for door prizes and will receive lots of Halloween goodies.

A hand-crafted trophy filled with tricks and treats awaits the first BoF Halloween Charity Dodgeball champion along with a pizza party in their honor.

All contestants may stay for the pizza party AFTER the tourney because before... would be a Greek tragedy.Champions will also have $150.00 donated in their name to the charity of their choice.

Prizes and trophies will also be awarded to BEST INDIVIDUAL and BEST TEAM costumes.

All matches will be a best-of-7 series. Tourney is double-elimination, matches will follow BoF rules found here in the column to the right.

Top-Seeded Jajballers Win 2009 BoF Chip

Congratulations to the Jajballers, your 2009 BoF Dodgeball champions. The no. 1 seed dominated the reg. season, waltzing through playoffs to face the no. 2 Flame Throwers in a best-of-15 final, where the Bryan Choi-led Ballers faced their biggest test.

But first, the road to the Chip started earlier in the day as the no. 4 Balls of Fury faced no. 5 Velvet Chrome in a play-in game for a chance to meet no. 1 in the next round. The Fury, led by the cannon-armed Dave Liu, dispatched the recently instated and inexperienced Chrome squad early in just 10 gms, taking the series 8-2. The win vs. the Velveteers would be little preparation for Jaj in the next round.

In the 2 vs. 3 match between the Flame Throwers and Soundtrack, Will Lee's team led early, looking dominant in the early-going.

The purple, however, came storming back winning 3 consecutive games to tie the series at 5-5. The Flamers, however, took over in the clutch winning, 3 of the last 4 and moving confidently into the Championship round.

The Jajballers also looked confident, facing little resistance from the short-handed Fury, for whom they needed only 9 games to eliminate. That confidence, however, seemed to translate into complacency in the Championship as the Flame Throwers shot out of the gate early in the match, leading 2-0, then 4-2. They looked dominant and for the first time all season, the Ballers looked frustrated, even doubtful.

But after trailing the entire first half of the match to the surprisingly upset-minded Flamers, and showing signs of previously unseen frustration, the Ballers regrouped as the Flamers fell apart. Unforced errors proved to be the downfall of the Flame Throwers as deep into 11 games they appeared to have control.

But with their mistakes, the Jajballers capitalized and took over control. They ended it in 14 despite the otherwise impressive Flamers effort. It wasn't pretty but the first Balls of Fury Dodgeball championship ended pretty much as expected, with the league's most dominant team winning it all.

We have canceled the Saturday games but this means we will have to have the playoffs on a weekend in the future. It won’t be the Labor Day weekend coming up but please be prepared to finish out the season on a Saturday or Sunday.

Next Wednesday’s schedule will be modified to adjust for the Saturday cancellation. We'll notify you ASAP when it’s been adjusted. Thanks for your time and enjoy your weekend.
